Jewel is a new winery that was founded in the spring of 2000. In just two years distribution expanded from 7 states to 33 states and will have distribution in all 50 states by the end of 2003. It is the goal of Jewel to produce quality wines that are true to the grape variety with the appropriate balance of acidity, oak, and fruit to ensure the wines are approachable enough for the beginner and serious enough for the connoisseur. By 2007 Jewel will be a 500,000 case wine brand, with solid distribution in fine wine retail, the mid to high-end restaurants, and top hotels throughout the U.S. With 9 different varietals, this means there will be plenty of good quality, value priced wine available.
The popularity of Syrah has soared in the last twenty years. In the early 80ís there were about 100 acres planted to Syrah, today there are 16,000 acres of Syrah planted throughout California.
The 2000 Syrah is comprised of two Lodi Vineyard lots. The first Syrah lot was aged for 15 months in 1 and 2 year old French oak barrels and adds great color and structure, with very dark berry fruit, to the blend. The second Lodi Syrah lot was aged for 13 months in 2 year old French and American oak barrels and adds bright, fresh berry fruit to the mouth and in the nose. The final blend includes 4% Alicante Bouschet to further enhance the depth and tannin structure while opening the aromatic fruitiness character. The 2000 Syrah has rich blueberries and wild berry flavor throughout the mouth, while retaining a rich, full-bodied structure and solid mouthfeel.
