Mandra Rossa Shiraz 2003
The perfect Mediterranean climate and terroir of Sicily are ideally suited for making wine. Of course, the best winemaking requires more than natural gifts. Enter Settesoli, one of Europe’s largest and most respected wineries. In the early ‘90s, the winery made an all-out commitment to make a new wine, named MandraRossa. Diego Planeta, president of Settesoli, took charge of MandraRossa’s creation. With single-minded focus, Planeta began by planting the best international and local grape varieties. He invested extensively in innovative winemaking technology and state-of-the-art equipment, and the formation of a distinguished team of winemakers, led by internationally renowned oenologist Carlo Corino.
The making of MandraRossa began by mapping every parcel of vineyard for aspect, gradient and altitude, so that the ideal terroirs for each varietal could be selected for planting. Thus, from the outset, every chosen parcel could be traced and monitored, right to harvest and beyond.
The intense Sicilian sun, offset by cooling sea breezes, permits reliable and extended ripening of the grapes. MandraRossa wines are hand-picked, and every harvested parcel is crushed and fermented separately to retain the grapes’ characteristics. Wines from individual parcels are carefully blended for nuanced complexity, yielding delicate scents and harmonious, fresh flavors.
Mandra Rossa Shiraz 2003 The MandraRossa estate vineyards are located near the town of Menfi, Sicily. This wine is made of 100% Shiraz with stainless steel fermentation and 3 months oak aging. Bright ruby red in color with a bouquet that offers ripe blackberry fruit intertwined with vanilla aromas. The palate has a well- defined structure that frames the soft, jammy fruit with persistent, integrated tannins and finishes with a firm, rounded length.
