Red Dust Shiraz
This wine is a rare find these days a $10 Australian Shiraz that is quite nice. It is a Robert Shack Selection who explains, “This is a joint venture with my Australian friend Hugh Mathews, former head of Lindeman’s Estate. He left several years ago to set up his own grape buying company. We operate RED DUST similar to the Clos Robert winery, where we buy ½ our needs in grapes, and blend the rest from bulk we buy from our "famous neighbors"… usually adding 5% Merlot to soften, and lower the alcohol level, but maintain the spice of a wine worth twice as much.”
The RED DUST Winery is headquartered in South Australia just north of Adelaide. It is an Aussie/American venture managed by winemaker, Hugh Matthews. A graduate of the well known Oenology division of Adelaide University, Hugh has been the President of both BRL Hardy and Lindeman Estates.
Shiraz is the heart & soul of the Australian Wine business and RED DUST will specialize in this fabulous variety. The winery is a negociente meaning they own no vineyards… they buy 50% of other grapes, and being so close to some of the best growing areas in Australia like The Barossa Valley, The Clare Valley and the newly discovered Limestone Coast, where some of the greatest wine names in Australia reside, like Penfolds and Henschke, Hugh has access to some of the best fruit and bulk available. He will buy the base wine in grapes from growers that he has known for 20 years and then blend from his “secret” spice rack of blending materials. This makes for a price/value winery!!
The 2009 Shiraz is a statement of the desired taste profile…Hugh is looking for the “Iron Hammer” up-front, but the “velvet glove” of black fruits, pepper and spice, elegance and finesse in the finish that demonstrates that the winery wants to over-deliver to the consumer. “We are not just another Australian winery!…we offer you a $20 bottle for ½ of that price…G’Day, and enjoy Australia”!
The Wine Tasting Notes
This full-bodied Shiraz has more elegance and grace than most at this price point. It has an intense bouquet with black fruit balanced by spicy, peppery notes that add complexity. Inviting with rich ripe fruit on the palate and great depth of flavor combining dark chocolate and ripe currant in smooth silky tannins with a soft slightly smoky finish.
Red Dust Shiraz is a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Merlot. The wine is deep ruby-purple in color with a rich aroma of blackberries, plums and a hint of pepper. Full in body with typical Aussie ripeness of fruit, the wine offers dark berry flavors complemented by just the right touch of oak. Well balanced to enjoy now and over the next 4-5 years, the wine lingers beautifully on the finish.
