Planeta La Segreta

Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. The trio’s newest winery is La Segreta in Menfi, upon which the Planeta winemaking expertise has been lavished to achieve wines of the very best quality. The grapes from this wine come from the Planeta winery’s first vineyard. The label pays tribute to this meaningful place with a map of the vineyard. Sicily One of Europe's oldest viticultural regions still offers some pleasant surprises. Sicily's oenological history is an ancient one, dating from the time when the island was part of Magna Graecia. The magic is in the fertile soil and Sicily's long, cloudless summers – with humidity but virtually no rain from June until harvesting in late August – two factors which make Sicilian vintages remarkably consistent from year to year. The Wine Grape Varieties- 50% Grecanico, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Viognier, 10% Fiano The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed; the juice is clarified through cold settling overnight and then inoculated with selected yeast. Fermentation and storage takes place in stainless steel vessels. The color is straw with light greenish accents The bouquet is lively and aromatic combining mineral scents with classic aromas of green citrus fruit, lime, peach and white melon On the palate it is fresh, supple and round, with good balance between fruit flavors and crisp acidity Planeta Accolades- La Segreta Bianco 2013 89 points, Wine Spectator Expressive up front, offering pretty orchard blossom, star fruit and melon notes, this well-knit white is subtle mid palate, with clean-cut acidity and a hint of fleur de sel defining the finish. Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier and Fiano. Food affinities- Excellent as an aperitif, and a perfect match with raw seafood dishes, lightly fried appetizers, salads and all types of creative cuisine. A fun and versatile wine, ideal for parties and other festive gatherings.
